OPD Arrests Cell Phone Robber Suspect

An alleged sexual assault victim gave cops a piece of evidence that they say helped them catch her alleged assailant.

The Oakland police are hoping a women’s quick grab of her call phone to record a man in the midst of robbing her home will help them catch him.

Oakland police said they have arrested the man who was caught on cell phone video robbing a home earlier this morning.

The victim in the case grabbed her cell phone and recorded the robbery. Following that exchange, police said he also sexually assaulted the woman.

She turned over the clip to the media and police.

Police said a tip from someone who saw the clip helped them identify Dion McDaniel, 47, as the suspect in the case.

Police said McDaniel was arrested Tuesday in Oakland.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged him with burglary and multiple sexual assault charges.

Police said McDaniel has an extensive criminal history including 11 prior felony convictions.

At the time of the crime, Oakland police said it was rare for a victim of a rape to capture video of his or her attacker following the attack and that this was the first case of its kind in Oakland.
