A big-rig hauling packages for the U.S. Postal Service flipped on its side in Danville, killing the 26-year-old driver and spilling boxes all over the highway six days before Christmas.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident was reported on southbound Interstate 680 near El Pintado Road in Danville about 3:30 a.m. on Monday. A postal spokesman said the packages had originated out of Sacramento and were headed for San Jose.

Sgt. Oscar Pacheco said the Sacramento driver went off the road and struck a freeway sign. He was taken to the hospital suffering "major" injuries, and was pronounced dead before 7 a.m.

The CHP doesn't really know what happened to cause the driver to go off the road. "A lot of what we have is based on witness statements," Pacheco said.

It also appears the truck driver struck a Ford Windstar minivan, which was found crumpled at the scene, and was seen being towed away from the site before 11 a.m.

The driver was a freelance contractor for the Postal Service,  spokesman Guz Ruiz said.
