In spite of what economists are saying, Sacred Heart Community Services in San Jose say things don't look all that bright based on the need this Thanksgiving holiday.
On Monday, the agency will start handing out its annual Thanksgiving boxes to low-income families. They’re expecting to feed at least 4,000 families, which would match the record set last year. But unfortunately, the demand is so bad this year that it’s likely they could break that record.
“It’s crazy,” said Jay Pecot of Sacred Heart. “What we see are a lot of people struggling. Expenses are up. Rent is up. Food prices are up. And that’s squeezing already distressed salaries.”
Each family will receive a box of canned goods and grains, a bag of vegetables and a frozen bird: enough for Thanksgiving day and a day or two more.
