San Jose celebrates the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for jobs and freedom with call for good jobs
As tens of thousands of people marched in Washington, D.C. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I have a dream" speech, hundreds more walked in downtown San Jose for the same reason.
San Jose organizers said they had representatives from very corner of Santa Clara County.
The state purpose of both marches was to remember the past struggles and to continue the fight for "good jobs, civil rights, and economic freedom."
“We are walking in the footsteps of the 1963 march on Washington, by empowering ourselves and our neighbors to fight for good jobs and economic opportunities” said Elizabeth Birks, President of the Silicon Valley African American Democratic Club.
Both the group in San Jose and the larger group in D.C. pledged that King's dream includes equality for gays, Latinos, the poor and the disabled.
