Responding to a recent spike in violence, one San Jose resident referred to it as a "cancer in our neighborhood," according to the San Jose Mercury News.
A man was stabbed at a Safeway on Story Road Tuesday night. Police arrested Michael Howard of San Jose in connection with the murder. (See mug shot below.) They have not released a motive for the crime.
A homeless woman was killed on August 13 at a nearby Walgreens by a man wielding a samurai sword.
Residents are concerned, scared and demanding the city do something about it.
At a recent news conference near that Safeway, two women were introduced by the San Jose Police Officer's Association -- two women bound by their frustration at the problem. The women both shop at these stores and are concerned about doing their shopping.
"This is like a cancer in our neighborhood. I have never seen it like this," Rubie Golart told Mercury News reporter Robert Salonga. She's lived in the area for 52 years.

The city has taken some measures to abate the gang-related violence, communicated to the City Council in a memo from the city manager, Debra Figone. Tactics include police sweeps, a 'Crisis Response Protocol,' and social service agencies.
Overtime funding has been renewed as well, Figone said, to maximize police efforts.
Residents are organizing an anti-violence rally and prayer vigil starting Monday at 6:30 p.m. in front of San Jose City Hall.
