Santa Clara County sheriff Laurie Smith is reportedly taking some heat for what some believe are insensitive remarks in response to an inmate hunger strike. Smith sparked tensions by suggesting some inmates could stand to lose a little weight. Deputies this week tweeted that untouched fresh food had in fact been donated to the Salvation Army.
