Passenger dies, driver flees after fiery stolen car crash in San Jose

A passenger was found dead in a burned stolen car following a crash in San Jose early Monday morning, but the driver was nowhere to be found, police said.

The wreck happened at about 1:30 a.m. in the area of Meridian Avenue and Woodruff Drive, according to police.

The unidentified driver, who may have been speeding, was travelling northbound on Meridian Avenue when they apparently lost control and slammed into a tree, police said. The vehicle then burst into flames.

The driver fled from the scene, police said.

The passenger was found dead inside the car after crews extinguished the fire, according to police.

During the course of the investigation, authorities determined that the car had been reported stolen.
