Videcast: “October-uary” Weather Continues

Considering you have to go back to November 24th for the last time we saw at least .20″ of rain around the Bay Area, conditions outside are indeed more like October than January and once again it will feel like Fall outside with highs in the 60s and possibly a few 70s. Winds will begin backing off later in the day which will decrease the downsloping warming effects (where the air warms, dries and mixes down to sea-level) that brought temperatures to records (near 70 degree temps) on Saturday. Now in many cases we’re starting off the day warmer thanks to early morning winds so its a kind of running start to temps today in parts of the Bay Area where even with less warming wind we should still highs getting close to records again. The rest of the week’s forecast is getting a little more interesting, beginning late Monday we’ll see more clouds coming in as weakening system drops in over Northern California. Its looking like some of the energy will ride up and over the Bay Area, possibly tossing some showers in the North Bay, with another piece of energy breaking off and rolling down the coast as a cut-off low pressure system. Wednesday should see the return of gusty offshore winds as high pressure rebounds…from there, we’ll be watching to see what happens with that cut off low which should park off the Southern California coast. Some of the weather models insist it will eventually lift northward and kick inland somewhere near the Bay Area next weekend which would bring a chance of showers. Other models disagree and merely scoot the low by to our south. Stay tuned…at this point you kind of have to root for any rain or Sierra snow changes given how far behind we are in the seasonal rain and snowfall totals. At the same time, its tough not to enjoy a 60-70 degree day around the Bay Area in January. Enjoy your Sunday! – Rob Mayeda
