A 72-year-old Sunnyvale woman, identified as Sixta Garcia, died Tuesday on a highway near Cupertino, after her Regal Buick rear-ended a big rig whose driver got out of vehicle to help another overturned big rig, according tot he California Highway Patrol.
By 1:30, a "severe traffic alert" was still being issued for the area of Wolfe Road and southbound Interstate Highway 280.
CHP Officer DJ Sarabia said a big rig carrying dirt overturned about 11 a.m. at that intersection - the preliminary indication was that the driver took the ramp too fast.
A driver in a second big rig hopped out of his vehicle to assist, Sarabia said. At that point, Garcia, driving a 1991 Regal Buick rear-ended the big rig that had stopped on the side of the road, and died.
The Santa Clara County Coroner had not released her name by early Tuesday afternoon.
