Woodward and Bernstein in Bay Area to Honor “Deep Throat”

Reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein are expected to attend a public memorial service this afternoon for W. Mark Felt, Woodward's clandestine source known as "Deep Throat" for The Washington Post stories about the Watergate cover-up that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation.

Felt, former associate director of the FBI, died at age 95 in his Santa Rosa home on Dec. 18. He admitted in a 2005 Vanity Fair magazine article he was Deep Throat and briefly greeted the press in the doorway of his home in May 2005.

In addition to Woodward and Bernstein, Felt's daughter Joan Felt and her sons are expected to share remembrances at the 3 p.m. service in the Glaser Center at 547 Mendocino Ave.

"Mark's family wishes to honor a great man who, during a grave national crisis, risked everything to prevent serious injustice," the family said in a notice about the service.

San Francisco attorney John O'Connor, who co-authored Felt's book,  "A G-Man's Life," said he also will speak. Felt's caregiver also will share his memories, O'Connor said.

The Glaser Center seats about 400 people, manager David Templeton said, and parking is available in the nearby Seventh Street garage.
