Bay Forecast: Mild May Continues With Showers

Some rain kicked off the holiday weekend with temperatures held down by cloud cover, steady ocean breeze and even cooler air aloft moving into the region. Look for some lingering showers – especially over the South Bay / Santa Cruz mountain locations into Sunday morning as we transition briefly into a breezy, drier Sunday afternoon. Highs should climb in a few areas into the low 70s (North Bay valleys) though all locations will be staying nearly 10-15 degrees below average for this time of year with highs in the 60s to low 70s. Memorial Day Monday is looking dry, however we’ll be watching more increasing clouds as another cold system spins down the coast introducing a chance for more rain especially for areas near the coast/North Bay by early Tuesday morning. Wednesday could see some more showers and possibly thunder as well depending if this low kicks inland over Central California – so stay tuned. Long term the trough-pattern or ‘dip’ in the jet stream looks to hang on into early June which means a continuation of our abnormally cool temperatures and greater than average chances for showers will continue through at least June 5th – wow! BTW – Sierra locations above 7,000 feet may see nearly 1 foot — that’s right, I said it – 1 foot of fresh snow from Sat-Sun. Snow levels will drop to near 4-5,000 by Sunday morning as snow turns more showery by Sunday afternoon mainly for areas south of Lake Tahoe. – Rob Mayeda
