Bay Forecast: Sun, Showers, Thunder, Hail & Mountain Snow!

We’ll literally see everything the weather can offer arriving in a day’s time today. Overnight rains have changed to scattered showers and isolated thunder later (due to some daytime heating warming into some very chilly air higher up). Given the airmass cold enough to support snow near 3,500-4,000 ft. – even moderate showers may drop some graupel (soft hail/ice pellets) in addition to stronger convective storms that will produce some thunder, pea-sized hail and briefly gusty winds. We’ll be watching to see if any of those stronger cells forming with afternoon heating show any signs of rotation for possibly larger hail until 5pm today. Monday morning should see a few scattered light rain showers before widespread rain returns in time for the evening commute. Tuesday looks rainy off/on again with some lingering showers into Wednesday morning! La Nina apparently doesn’t want to lose its cooler and wetter than average Spring grip over the Bay Area. Fans of drier, warmer weather will like Thursday and Friday as our temps climb into the mid 60s and lower 70s to finish the week. A slight risk of showers lurks for next weekend as well as a cut off low forms off the Central California coast. At this point, maybe it will feel more like Spring in… June. – Rob Mayeda
