HD Zoom: Gulf Oil Nearing Florida & the Atlantic?

From NBC Bay Area’s Rob Mayeda: New satellite images show some disturbing hints the oil plume in the Gulf of Mexico is drifting very close to the “Loop” current. The “Loop” current is a warm water transport that runs along the Yucatan Peninsula upwards to the Florida Keys and rapidly heads up the Eastern Seaboard. This warm water current is known to be a factor in boosting the strength of hurricanes forming in the Gulf of Mexico. But the attention on the “Loop” current for now, is more based on the SE drift the expanding oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Should the oil plume reach the “Loop” current, it will likely merge with the Gulf Stream current, the main current that parallels the East Coast and in theory could spill petroleum contamination into the ecosystems and fishing areas off the US East Coast.
