The U.S. Coast Guard is searching the waters off the coast of Hawaii for a missing surfer who has San Diego roots, officials told NBC 7.
Kirk Passmore of Haleiwa was reported missing Wednesday while surfing off Oahu's North Shore, officials said. He was last seen near Alligator Rock, south of Waimea Bay.
Known by some as “Red” according to Surfline Magazine, the former Carlsbad resident was described by officials as in his early 30s.
Surfline quoted fellow surfers as saying Passmore attempted to get by 30-foot waves but wiped out and didn’t resurface.
His surfboard was located onshore according to the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety will resume the search for the missing surfer Thursday.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and the Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island helped in the rescue efforts.
