A South Florida toddler who accidentally shot himself in the head is making great strides on his road to recovery.

Three-year-old Darnal Mundy isn't quite ready to go home but doctors said he's recovering quite well and has exceeded their expectations.

Mundy is still recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital but made his first public appearance Tuesday, nearly three months to the day he shot himself in the head with his parent's gun.

The shooting happened in August while his parents slept in their northeast Miami apartment. They believe he was looking for an iPad and found the gun in a drawer.

Doctors said he shot himself in the center of his head. He's undergoing physical therapy and doctors are hopeful he'll make a full recovery.

The doctors also said Mundy could be released as soon as next week, just in time for his 4th birthday.
