The gimmick sounds more like one that would be offered on a game show, than from the district attorney's office in San Francisco.
But DA George Gascon launched a deal this week, asking iPhone users to fill out a Surveymonkey.com questionnaire on whether they are using Apple's new Activation Lock on ios7 and if they do, two lucky winners will win Golden State Warriors Tickets or a signed ball by this years' basketball team.
Gascon, who along with San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr, are trying everything in their power to combat cell phone theft that is permeating the city, came up with the survey to figure out how many people are actually using the "kill switch" and "Find my iPhone" apps, now available to anyone who has downloaded the new operating system. A kill switch is a safety mechanism to shut down a device in an emergency situation.
"There is considerable concern that the solution will be largely ineffective if the majority of iPhone users have not taken these steps," Gascon said in a statement on Monday. "However, if Activation Lock has been embraced, there is hope that thieves will learn that there's no payoff from robbing people for their iPhones, and with any luck we will see a decline in the epidemic of violent smartphone robberies that have plagued our urban centers."
Two survey respondents will be selected at random to win one of two prizes. One will win two tickets to the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Golden State Warriors on Dec. 21. With the other receiving the grand prize, an autographed ball by the 2012-2013 Warriors.
