Australia's Perth Zoo Celebrates Galapagos Tortoise's 50th Birthday

A Galapagos tortoise at Australia’s Perth Zoo celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday. The tortoise named Cerro was treated to a special birthday cake made from some of his favorite fruits, such as watermelon, strawberries, kiwifruit and pumpkin. Perth Zoo said Cerro was born at the San Diego Zoo and was transported to the Western Australia city in 2005. According to the zoo, there are about 20,000 Galapagos tortoises left in the wild. The species is currently threatened by rats, dogs and cats, making them vulnerable to extinction. They are the largest tortoises in the world and can live past 100 years old.
