Marathon Runner Initially Treated for Flu and Ankle Injury Leaves Hospital as a Multiple Amputee

A doctor diagnosed Mario Guzman with the flu and also treated him for what was thought to be a sprained ankle, but those symptoms were related to a common bacterial infection. By the time Guzman went to the ER he was in septic shock. He filed a complaint with the California Medical Board, which determined his doctor’s treatment “fell below the standard of care,” but the doctor ultimately didn’t face any discipline.
