Fort Mason: San Francisco's Port of Embarkation

During World War II, 23.5 million tons of material went through the San Francisco Port of Embarkation – that equaled 350,000 rail cars. The number of army troops, that includes the Army Air Forces, that went through the San Francisco Port of Embarkation was about 1.2 million soldiers. To do this, it took 30,000 civilian and military personnel to run the San Francisco Port of Embarkation.
