State Finds Mentally Ill Improperly Denied Coverage for Treatment Nearly Half the Time

State and federal laws have helped end the stigma of mental illness, but thousands of Californians are still facing roadblocks to care. An NBC Bay Area review of state data finds health plans and insurers are improperly denying coverage of mental health treatment. On one hand, doctors are urging critical treatment. On the other hand, health plans and insurers are questioning if that care is needed. That leaves parents like Leslie Kornblum and Roberta Friedman fighting to get their daughter they care they believe she needs. The Investigative Unit’s Liz Wagner reports in a story that aired on May 12, 2016.
