World's Oldest Orangutan Hails From Australia

The Perth Zoo in Australia says it has the oldest living Sumatran orangutan in the world, earning it a Guinness world record. According to the zoo’s primate keeper, the 60-year-old orangutan named Puan is believed to have been born in the wild in 1956 and arrived at the Perth Zoo in 1968 as a gift from the sultan Johore of Malaysia in exchange of some native Australian animals. The keeper said the process to determine the orangutan’s age was long and tedious, with the zoo having to rely on their old records, and volunteers’ memories. She added that the orangutan is in relatively good health but a little bit cranky in her old age. Australian media reported that Puan has exceeded the usual age for this species as they don’t usually live past 50 years of age.
