A grass fire just outside of Gilroy heavily damaged a house and destroyed an outbuilding this afternoon, a Cal Fire Battalion Chief said.
The fire was reported at about 1:40 p.m. at 10000 Geri Lane, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke said.
Firefighters had it contained at about 3:30 p.m. but not before it completely destroyed an outbuilding and heavily damaged a house, Leitzke said.
The two-story, 3,000-square-foot house was left uninhabitable and the residents there will have to seek other accommodations for now, Leitzke said.
About a half-acre of grass was burned as well. Firefighters remained there this evening making sure that the fire did not flare up again.
Leitzke did not know what caused the fire.
