A two-year-old girl was seriously injured as she chased a ball into the street and was hit by an SUV in Pittsburg Monday, police said.

The girl was with her family visiting in the 100 block of Jimno Avenue and playing outside with several other children at about 6 p.m., police Lt. Ron Raman said.

A ball rolled into the street and she ran after it. The driver of an SUV didn't see the girl run into the street and hit her with the vehicle, Raman said.

The girl was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The driver stopped and tried to help once he realized that he had hit the girl.

Police do not believe that alcohol or speed were factors in the collision, Raman said.
