AC Transit Pays $10.5M To Woman Hit By Bus

The fateful bus trip in 2008 cost Abby Nichols her health. And it will cost AC Transit $10.5 million.

The bus agency agreed this week to pay Nichols, 23, a settlement of $10.5 million to resolve a lawsuit she filed after an AC Transit bus hit her in 2008, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Nichols was in a North Oakland crosswalk when a bus turning right struck her, crushing her hip, breaking her pelvis and dislocating her shoulder, according to  the newspaper. She will  need to walk with a cane for the rest of her life, her attorneys said.

The bus driver, Jessica Gonzalez, was fired.

The bus mishap's hit to taxpayers is fortunately limited: the transit agency needs to pay only $1 million out of pocket, with the rest covered by its insurance policy.
