Airline Wants to Launch San Jose-to-China Flights

The route would be first-ever nonstop service between China and Silicon Valley

There's no nonstop air travel service between San Jose and China ... for now. Hainan Airlines is seeking permission from federal authorities to start offering nonstop air travel from mainland China to Mineta San Jose International Airport, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

If approved, it would be the first time direct flights connected China and San Jose, the newspaper reported.

China's economy is roaring, and the business atmosphere in Silicon Valley isn't bad, either.

Hainan already operates flights out of American cities Chicago, Seattle and Boston, the newspaper reported.

San Jose has been an attractive location for new overseas routes connecting Asia and the United States: All Nippon Airways started offering direct flights between San Jose and Tokyo in 2011.

It's not yet known how much the 12 1/2 hour flight from San Jose to Beijing would cost, the newspaper reported.
