A small plane with engine trouble tried to make an emergency landing on a Cal State Northridge soccer field on Sunday crashed onto a street, fire officials said on Sunday.

The plane left from Novato and was headed to Orange County when its engine failed, fire officials said.

Two college students who were coming home from church rushed to rescue the couple inside the plane.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. at 17901 Plummer Street.

Firefighters put out a small fire and treated a man and a woman who had non-lifethreatening injuries, firefighters said.

There were no injuries to other people on the ground, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the LAFD.

No buildings or students at campus were or are endangered, Humphrey said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that the Cessna 206 was approaching Van Nuys Airport when it lost engine power and made a forced landing at Plummer and Zelzah streets.

The plane overshot the athletic field, crashed through a chain link fence and overturned just west of Zelzah Street, south of Plummer, the LAFD said.
