How often do the important but time-consuming tasks of protecting the environment and protecting your identity dovetail at one simple event?

Thankfully, for the time-strapped amongst us--and let's face it, who isn't?--that's exactly what's happening on Saturday, June 9 during Comerica Bank's second annual Shred Day Bay Area. Comerica has teamed up with Iron Mountain and NBC Bay Area for the six hour paper shredding extravaganza, which kicks off at 9 a.m. at the HP Pavilion parking lot in San Jose. You're invited to bring four bags or boxes of any size and Iron Mountain will not only destroy them free of charge, but will also transport the processed material for recycling.

If you think that diverting four boxes of paper waste from a landfill hardly constitutes saving the planet, think again. Let's consider these staggering numbers: 20,000 pounds of paper were shredded at last year's event, while at a similar Comerica event in Dallas/For Worth this April, participants set the Guinness World Record for paper collected in a 24-hour period by shredding 111,920 pounds.

Beyond preserving landfill space and saving trees, shredding your paper waste will also ensure that your vital personal information doesn't get into the hands of  thieves or "dumpster divers."  Identity theft remains one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, which means your boxes should be packed with old utility invoices, bank statements, medical records, credit card offers, old tax documents and any other documents that cannot be recreated electronically.

So, if you find yourself hoarding any of the above in your attic, it's time to let go without worrying about your identity being stolen or feeling guilty about all the excessive waste. Comerica's Shred Day Bay Area is a one-stop problem solver for all your paper disposal needs.
