Mark Matthews comes to NBC Bay Area from KGO-TV in San Francisco where he was the political reporter for more than a decade. He reported live from the New Hampshire primaries and Presidential debates in 2004 and 2008; and both the Republican and Democratic national conventions in 2004, 2008, and 2012.
In 2005, while covering protests outside the president’s ranch in Texas, he got word of a big storm heading towards New Orleans. He arrived one day before the Crescent City was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and spent the next ten days reporting on the aftermath.
Matthews’ other major stories include Pablo Escobar and the cocaine cartels in Colombia and the war between the Sandinistas and the Contras in Nicaragua and Honduras. He also spent six weeks in Israel covering the Gulf war in the early 90’s.
Mathews has been recognized with three Emmy awards including one for an investigative series on Rick Daye – a man who was wrongly convicted of kidnap and rape. His reporting led to the courts ordering a DNA test – which was unavailable when Daye was convicted – and the results cleared him of the crime. Daye was released after 10 years in prison and investigators eventually found and convicted the man responsible. Mathews also received a McGraw Hill Editorial Excellence award for the story and was named the Trial Attorney Media Person of the Year.
Additional career honors include a national Iris Award, two San Diego Press Club Awards, and a Golden Mike Award from the Radio & Television News Association.
A graduate of the University of Texas, Austin with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism, Matthews began his career at KSBY, San Luis Obispo as a general assignment reporter and has also worked at KERO in Bakersfield, and KGTV in San Diego.
