When talking about housing, financial experts often advise people should spend no more than one-third of their pay on housing.
But that doesn't fly around the Bay.
The government defines affordable housing as costing no more than 30% of your income, but residents in the East Bay, where rent was once considered affordable, told NBC Bay Area they surpassed that percentage a long time ago and the latest census data agrees.
