White Pony Express, a Pleasant Hill-based nonprofit that provides food and clothing to the needy, has opened a new school pantry at Marsh Elementary School in Antioch.
This is White Pony Express' 10th such school pantry, providing milk, meat and fresh produce to Marsh students and their families.
The Marsh pantry, the third such pantry in the Antioch school district, is the first of six new pantries to be opened with the help of a $286,000 grant from CalRecyle, a California state agency that promotes waste reduction and recycling, officials from the nonprofit said.
The plan is to bring approximately 1,000 pounds of fresh surplus food each week to Marsh. An estimated 60 to 70 families, comprising about 280 people, are expected to benefit from the deliveries to Marsh.
Other White Pony Express school pantries include Lincoln Elementary, CORE, Verde Elementary and Ford Elementary, all in Richmond; the Boys and Girls Club in Martinez; EM Downer Elementary in San Pablo; Riverview Middle School in Bay Point); and Fremont Elementary and Antioch Middle School, both in Antioch.
