A seasonal Half Moon Bay lifeguard has died while surfing at Pomponio State Beach in unincorporated San Mateo County on Sunday, according to California State Parks officials.

The lifeguard, identified as 20-year-old Malcolm Feix, was off-duty on Sunday when he was surfing and was pulled out of the water by a good friend of his who is also a seasonal lifeguard.

State parks officials said this was Feix's fifth summer as a seasonal lifeguard with the department. They didn't announce a cause of death or what may have led up to his death.

According to his Facebook page, Feix studied electrical engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
