A Pittsburg police officer died while working off-duty security at an East Bay mall on Monday, according to police officials.
Officer Donnie Pearman was with Pittsburg police for more than 22 years before his sudden death Monday, Capt. Ron Raman said.
Pearman was working security at the Sunvalley Mall in Concord when he gave chase to a shoplifting suspect, according to the Mercury News. The newspaper reports Pearman suffered a heart attack during the pursuit and passed away Monday evening.
"Pearman was a dedicated police officer whom had a positive impact on his family, peers and the members of the community he served," Raman said in a statement.
Raman did not provide details on Pearman's death and said more information will be released later, as it becomes available.
