New Metering Lights To Ease South Bay Traffic

Caltrans flips on the metering lights on Highway 87 in Santa Clara County.

Transit officials turned on ramp metering lights on northbound state Highway 87 in Santa Clara County Tuesday morning.

The metering lights will be operational during the morning rush hour, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday through Friday, from Santa Teresa Boulevard and Lelong Avenue to Skyport Boulevard, according to the California Department of Transportation.

Metering lights on southbound state Highway 85 from the Almaden Expressway to Cottle Road, including the southbound Highway 87 to southbound Highway 85 connector, will be turned on Jan. 27 and run weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., according to Caltrans.

The new ramp metering system, a joint effort between Caltrans and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, is designed to ease rush-hour traffic along the state Highway 85 and 87 corridors.
