Child Molester Stripped of San Mateo Honor

Former child psychiatrist has San Mateo honor formally rescinded

A former child psychiatrist who pleaded no contest to multiple counts of child molestation has been stripped of a lifetime achievement award, according to reports.

William Hamilton Ayres, 81, was feted by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors just as an investigation into allegations that he abused children, according to the San Mateo Daily Journal.

Ayres will be sentenced in August on charges he molested five male former patients who were between 9 and 13 years old.

Ayres was a "once-prominent" doctor who received patients referred to him from the court system. He was arrested in 2007.

Prior to his arrest, he was president of a national child psychiatry organization and hosted a sex education series.

He may have had close to 50 victims, according to the newspaper.
