Dozens of Animals Die in House Fire

More than 90 animals were killed in a fire at a Bethel Island home Monday morning, an East Contra Costa Fire Protection District acting battalion chief said.

Eighty-eight birds, a baby pig, a small dog and a few other  animals were killed in the two-alarm blaze in the 2600 block of Taylor Road, said acting Battalion Chief John Foster.

It is not clear why so many animals were being kept at the home.

The fire, which caused an estimated $200,000 of damage, was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. and controlled at about 11:05 a.m.

There was no report of injuries to residents or firefighters, Foster said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
