Monterey Coastline Closed Due to Sewage in Water

The city of Monterey coastline from just south of Coast Guard Pier to Commercial Wharf One is closed because of sewage in the water, county health officials said Tuesday.

The area will stay closed until water samples show that it's safe again based on state guidelines.

The contaminated water can cause gastroenteritis and other illnesses in people if they come in contact with the water.

A blockage in a sewer line caused sewage to come up through a manhole and go into a storm drain that leads to Breakwater Cove Marina in Monterey. City crews have since cleared the blockage and cleaned up.

Information on Monterey Peninsula beaches can be obtained by calling (831) 755-4599 or at the County of Monterey Health Department website.
