Nadia Lockyer to Resign

Embattled politician tells local newspaper she will step down from her political post.

The wife of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer says she will resign from Alameda County's Board of Supervisors following a string of bizarre public incidents she has blamed on her own chemical dependency.

Nadia Lockyer on Friday told The San Jose Mercury News of her plan to send a resignation letter to her colleagues and constituents, saying she wants to focus on raising her 8-year-old child.

The 40-year-old Nadia Lockyer's public troubles began in February, when she claimed she was assaulted by an ex-boyfriend in a Newark hotel room.

Most recently, an e-mail sent from her account to a Bay Area News Group reporter claimed her husband had given her drugs. Bill Lockyer's office denied those allegations.

Nadia Lockyer's resignation letter said being a mother is her most important role.

Lockyer’s resignation still needs to be accepted by the Board of Supervisors, who are scheduled to bring up the matter during a meeting on April 24.

Bill Lockyer released the following statement about his wife's resignation:

"I fully support Nadia’s decision to step down as county supervisor and focus on completing her recovery and caring for our son. She has worked hard and well for her district.  But the last year took a great toll on Nadia. It’s best for her, best for Diego and best for our family that she leave public office."
