Caltrans on Monday launched a statewide education campaign urging 24 million Californians who drive the highways to save water.
The campaign includes 700 electronic highway signs that flash the message "Serious Drought Help Save Water."
In addition, the agency is helping battle the California drought by cutting its irrigation activities along highways in half, postponing all non-essential highway planting and is using irrigation technologies that can reduce water use by as much as 60 percent.
Caltrans said the signs will be activated when there are no traffic safety messages or Amber Alerts.
