Alleged Vigilantes' Lawyer: Slain Pimp “Had Many Enemies”

Attorneys for the parents accused of killing their daughter's pimp mount defense.

Who shot Calvin Sneed? The list of possible shooters is long, according to the lawyers of the parents accused of killing Sneed, who was pimping their underage daughter.

Sneed, 22, was shot and killed June 4 in the Bayview District, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Prosecutors have fingered as the killers Barry Gilton, 38, and his longtime girlfriend Lupe Mercado, 37, whose underage daughter, 17, was allegedly being pimped out by Sneed.

Sneed's father admits that his son pimped out girls but denied he was a gang member.

In court Wednesday, a crowd of family and other supporters turned out for Gilton and Mercado, the newspaper reported.

Mercado, a Muni driver sidelined on disability, allegedly followed Sneed to Los Angeles in May in an attempt to shoot him before firing the fatal shots on June 4.

His attorneys say that he did everything he could to alert authorities that Sneed was pimping out his underage daughter -- and in addition, Sneed had a long list of people who wanted to kill him, beginning with rival gang members.

"Mr. Sneed was in the mix," said the attorney, Tony Tamburello, the newspaper reported. "He's a gang member, he has been involved in gang fights and shootouts in Los Angeles, and there are many people who had a motive to do harm to him. We feel like our clients are being unfairly targeted."
