Snow Hits Sierra Foothills Only 1,000 Feet Up

Unusually low snow fell early Friday in the Sierra foothills, with some of it sticking on the ground as low as El Dorado Hills at 1,000 feet elevation.

Snow also accumulated in Rescue, Cameron Park, Auburn and Foresthill.

The same weather system snarled traffic in the Sierra.

Along Interstate 80, eastbound traffic was being held at Applegate because of snow and crashes. Drivers should use another route.

Westbound trucks were being screened 5 miles west of Reno. Permit loads were prohibited.

But through late Friday afternoon, there's another wave of rain, and an increased chance for thunderstorms.

Occasional showers will continue through the night and into Saturday.

Another stronger storm will move through Saturday evening and into Sunday.

Expect stronger winds with periods of moderate to heavy rain that will last through Sunday. Snow level should actually rise a little with this second storm.
