Suspect Who Stole SJPD Patrol Vehicle in Custody

A suspect who stole a San Jose police vehicle is back in custody after being found in Hayward, police said Tuesday afternoon.

The police patrol car was found in Hayward early Tuesday without the suspect, Andrew Trujillo, who was later detained after being spotted in another stolen semi-truck.

Trujillo was initially taken into custody around 5:23 a.m. after police received a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area of Hoger Way in San Jose. Trujillo was in another semi-truck that was reported stolen.

After police handcuffed the 40-year-old suspect and placed him in the back of a SJPD patrol car, Trujillo somehow escaped and fled in the police vehicle, according to San Jose police.

The cruiser was later found in the 23000 block of Clawiter Road, police said, and all the police firearms were accounted for.

Hayward police assisted San Jose police in the search for Trujillo.
