A first-generation American, Angelica Delgado’s parents originate from Cuba – a country with a prolific history in judo. At 9 years old, she began to study judo at the insistence of her father, Miguel Delgado, who had previously been a member of Cuba’s national team. Angelica won her first national championship in 2010, then nearly qualified for the London Olympics in 2012 but fell one spot short in the rankings. Despite that disappointment, Delgado has maintained an unwavering focus on competing year-round in preparation for the 2016 Games.
