The Great White Blog's Great Live Blog of the NHL Trade Deadline

Welcome to the Great White Blog's NHL trade deadline live blog! Follow along throughout the day for updates from around the league, including in San Jose, and for analysis on how the latest moves affect the Sharks.

2:21 p.m. PST -- The Kane deal is official, and the full conditions are known: The Sharks will send a lottery-protected first round pick to the Sabres if Kane re-signs OR San Jose wins the Stanley Cup. If Kane does not, it becomes a second round pick.

The second pick is either a third round pick in 2019, or a fourth round pick in 2020, depending upon what the Sharks decide.

With all the details known, that'll conclude this trade deadline edition of the Great White Blog on NBCSportsCalifornia.com. We'll have plenty of content throughout the rest of the day, and ahead of San Jose's next game on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers when Kane is expected to debut.

NHL Trade Deadline Update with Brodie Brazil and Marcus White

Sharks fans -- Brodie Brazil and Marcus White break down the big trade for Evander Kane and all the other deadline deals.Posted by NBC Sports Bay Area / California on Monday, February 26, 2018

12:16 p.m.  -- The deals are flying in fast and furious now that the deadline has passed.

Ryan McDonagh is reportedly headed to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and (former?) Rangers teammate J.T. Miller is reportedly headed to Tampa Bay with him. Tomas Tatar will join the Vegas Golden Knights, while Patrick Maroon is leaving the Edmonton Oilers and will head to the New Jersey Devils.

The run through the Atlantic Division this postseason is going to be *grueling.*

12:07 p.m.  -- Don't purchase your "Karlsson 65" Sharks jersey just yet: The Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch reported that Karlsson was not traded today.

12:00 p.m.  -- The deadline has arrived, which means teams can no longer make any trades -- if the players involved are to be eligible for the postseason. Trades can still trickle in, and likely should over the next hour or so as they are approved.

11:49 a.m.  -- With Kane off of the market, other dominoes are starting to fall. The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired Thomas Vanek, another rental scorer, from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forwards Tyler Motte and Jussi Jokinen, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie

The clock is ticking on the deadline, and the Sharks have made arguably the biggest splash of the day, barring a last-minute Karlsson/McDonagh/insert-prized-player-here trade.

11:36 a.m. -- The conditions of the 2019 first round pick headed to Buffalo? It's only a first if the Sharks re-sign Kane, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

11:25 a.m. -- The details are in, and the Sharks reportedly gave up a 2019 first round pick, a conditional fourth round pick in 2020, and center Danny O'Regan. Here's our breaking news story on San Jose's reported acquisition of Evander Kane.

Plenty more to come, including a Facebook Live stream breaking down the deadline at 12:30 p.m. PST.

11:11 a.m. -- The Sharks have acquired winger Evander Kane from the Buffalo Sabres, according to TSN. No word yet on what the return is, but according to Bob McKenzie, he is a rental.

We'll continue to update this developing story.

10:32 a.m.  -- Less than 90 minutes until we reach the deadline, and we're not seeing much in the way of the movement. The Ducks are interested in acquiring Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty, according to Sportsnet's John Shannon.

Pacioretty's struggled, but he'd give Anaheim arguably the best compliment of wingers within the Pacific. The Sharks don't play the Ducks again the season, but with the formerly 'Mighty' team has picked up points in six of its last eight games, and would challenge San Jose for the final home ice spot in the division with Pacioretty on board.

10:02 a.m. -- In the last few days we've seen two pending unrestricted free agents (Rick Nash and Paul Stastny) fetch first round picks, as well as a pending restricted free agent (Ryan Hartman) and a player with a year left on his contract (Derick Brassard).

It's difficult to envision the Sharks giving up a pick for a pending UFA, unless they're supremely confident they can work out an extension. 10 years ago today, Doug Wilson gave up a first round pick in a package for pending UFA Brian Campbell, who ultimately left in free agency.

Campbell's departure cleared the way for the Sharks to acquire Dan Boyle the following summer, but Wilson likely has that experience (and his with trading for Bill Guerin) in mind when thinking about giving up a top pick.

9:46 a.m. -- The Central isn't the only division getting in on the inter-division fun, and it's an alliterative trade no less! Vegas sent forward Brandon Lepisic to Vancouver in exchange for defenseman Philip Holm, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Speaking of Vegas and Bob McKenzie: He reported on TSN's TradeCentre that the Golden Knights, along with the Tampa Bay Lightning, are believed to be the teams with the most interest in Erik Karlsson. If Karlsson indeed does not land in San Jose, seeing him in Vegas is easily the Sharks' nightmare scenario.

9:32 a.m. -- The Central Division's leaders are loading up.

Minutes after the Nashville Predators acquired Chicago Blackhawks forward Ryan Hartman for a package that included a 2018 first round pick, the Winnipeg Jets traded their first round pick as part of a package to a division rival. The St. Louis Blues traded center Paul Stastny for the aforementioned pick, a conditional fourth in the 2020 draft, and a prospect, and the Jets now arguably have the best depth down the middle in the West.

Our friends at NBC Sports Chicago will have updates on the Hartman deal, and all of Chicago's moves, as the day progresses.

8:37 a.m.  -- Shameless plug alert: We took a look at some key stats that summed up the Sharks' struggles on their most recent road trip, which ended with a loss Sunday in Minnesota.

7:55 a.m.  -- The Sharks remain interested in Buffalo Sabres winger (and pending unrestricted free agent) Evander Kane, according to The Athletic's Craig Custance, as do the Ducks and Flames. San Jose general manager Doug Wilson has been adamant that he's not interested in trading a young roster player or his first round pick for a pure rental, but Kane's cost is expected to come down, per Custance:

But there was some skepticism in the marketplace on Sunday that the Sabres were going to get a first-round pick in a deal for Kane. "I have a hard time believing they will," said one potential interested party. A more realistic expectation might be a second-round pick and a higher caliber prospect.

The Sharks don't currently own a second round pick in 2018, but do have second round picks in 2019 and 2020. The Flames don't have those picks in either of the next two drafts, while the Ducks do.

7:47 a.m. -- The Ottawa Senators traded defenseman, just not the defenseman the rest of the league is waiting with baited breath to see if he gets moved.

Ottawa acquired Cole on Friday as part of the Derick Brassard trade. The Sharks were linked to that aforementioned other Senators blueliner, two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, over the weekend. Is this the first domino to fall, or will Ottawa's rumored insistence on including Bobby Ryan in any deal keep the Swedish defenseman in Canada's capital?

Meanwhile, with Cole in tow, the Blue Jackets may flip disgruntled defenseman Jack Johnson to one of San Jose's rivals, according to The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.

The Ducks trail the Sharks by a point in the Pacific Division standings, but San Jose has a game in hand.
