The Tarps Are Off: Giants Play Ball

2009 season underway in San Francisco

The sky cleared, the tarps were pulled from the infield and the Giants 2009 season began with Tim Lincecum's first pitch at 1:29 p.m.

Lincecum lasted 3 innings, giving up 3 runs before rookie righty Joe Martinez made his Major League debut in relief.

American Idol Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks (visiting San Francisco as part of the stage production of Grease) sang the National Anthem. Danville's own hero-pilot Sully Sullenberger threw out the ceremonial first pitch and then Lincecum got to work -- striking out two in the top of the first inning.

Once fans settled in, the vibe was a bit more electric than any other opening day in recent years -- mostly, it seems because everyone was glad the weather cleared up enough to get the game underway. Check out video from inside the park as crews tried to get the wet  field ready this morning in time for the first pitch.
