Architecture Watch: Zaha & Pitt Do Taiwan, Venice

Next-Gene 20, a new high-end residential development planned for Taiwan, officially premiered during this week at the Venice Biennale. 10 International architects and 10 Taiwanese architects were invited to build villas along Taiwan's northeast coast. Of note: Zaha Hadid, Kengo Kuma, MVRDV, and Brad Pitt's pet architecture firm, GRAFT. Next-Gene 20 is an ambitious project, but what we've seen so far seems to presume that the "next generation" will be anti-urban hermits living in a development that's less of a community and more of a picturesque folly park— note the buildings' previous names. To wit: Shell Under Copious Rain.
