Let's Talk About This “Shark Night 3D” Trailer

We were a little bit excited when we first saw the fantastic poster for "Shark Night," figuring it was maybe in the vein of last year's "Piranha 3D," both an homage to and send up of a timeless genre. Alas...

The first clue that there's something amiss here is the complete lack of any mention that the gorgeous brunette who seems vaguely familiar is, in fact, Katherine McPhee. In a film loaded with vaguely familiar no-names, McPhee is the closest thing this film has to a star. But she isn't mentioned in the trailer, nor in the cast listing on IMDB (though they do list he stunt double).

The second thing that hit us as weird is that, if the trailer is to be believed, the black guy dies first. Now maybe this is part of director David R. Ellis's effort to goof on a tired horror trope, but the trailer gives no sense of a wink or a nod. It seems, quite simply, that the black guy dies first.

And finally, what starts out as a possibly amusing shark attack thriller, appears to devolve into hillbilly torture porn, a la "I Spit on Your Grave," which would make sense since the film's producers include people from films like "Hostel" and the newest "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

Anyway, we'll find out Sept. 12.
