Metallica Starts New Music Company

Live DVD kicks off Blackened Recordings

This week, Metallica has officially dropped the first release from its newly formed company, Blackened Recordings -- a double-disc live DVD and Blu-Ray called Quebec Magnetic shot by director Wayne Isham at two concerts in Quebec City in 2009. The shows featured a setlist voted on by fans.

It's a monumentous occasion for the band, which recently parted with longtime label Warner Brothers Records and has taken ownership of the masters of the mighty Metallica back catalog. Blackened Recordings has done a deal with Los Angeles-based Rhino Entertainment to manufacture and distribute future releases.

"It's always been about control for us as a band," said Metallica's Lars Ulrich in a statement. "Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, giving us 100 percent control and putting us in the driver's seat of our own creative destiny."
