West 580 Reopens Following Suspect Search

Traffic alert- westbound I-580 was closed during the height of the evening commute Thursday.

Oakland police asked for the CHP to close the freeway after a suspect abandoned a car on the road and fled on foot, CHP Officer Sam Morgan said.  Police said they thought the man was armed.

The lanes were closed at the MacArthur Boulevard exit in Oakland from 3 to 5:15 p.m.  During that time armed officers walked on all lanes of the roadway as they searched for the man.

Car moved freely immediately after the westbound lanes reopened, but traffic was sure to be a mess for the rest of the commute as drivers filter through the backup.

Police said they suspended the search for the man, but the suspect remained at large.
