Mavericks Wipe Out

The crowds line up to check out the Mavericks Surf Contest.

Fans of the Mavericks Surf Contest will have to wait until at least next season to watch the big-wave competition off the California coast.

Organizers said Thursday that the contest window, which opened Jan. 1, has closed.

The competition is usually held sometime between December 1 and March 31, but this year did not produce the meteorological mix of massive sea swells and coastal weather conditions needed for the contest.

Organizers hope to open the contest window earlier next season.

They say this past November featured some of the best Mavericks surf in a decade.
