One East Bay elementary school is planning to have extra security on hand Monday after a woman attacked a 9-year-old child on campus with a hammer.

The incident happened Friday at Lafayette Elementary School in Oakland.

Police said the attacker is the mother of another child at that same school.

A 9-year-old Oakland girl has been hospitalized after school officials said the mother of a schoolmate attacked her with a hammer. Kimberly Tere reports.

According to a district spokesperson, the victim was beaten during recess. When the girl's teacher noticed that she did not return to class, they immediately called a security guard and searched for her.

The guard found the 9-year old leaving the bathroom with the suspected attacker--a woman who has a daughter at the same school.

Police said crews rushed the girl to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The woman was arrested at the scene, and the district spokesperson said it may have started with a family feud off campus.

On Monday, Oakland police plans to offer the extra security.
